| OROMIA PUBLISHING COMPANY 8/18/2007 What is the Oromia Publishing Company? It is a company that mainly aims at establishing a new frontier to develop the Oromo language, culture, history, art, and literature. By using Oromo resources, it expands the horizon of the Oromo knowledge and institutionalizes Oromummaa for which Oromo heroines and heroes have sacrificed their lives for. This company is intended to enable concerned Oromos and others to come together in the diaspora to restore Oromo cultural resources and to build Oromummaa while owning part of a business organization that they lead and manage. Once Oromia is a self-determined nation, this company will be a leading organization in publishing and distributing information and knowledge related to the Oromo language, history, culture, art, and literature in our motherland.
Why do we need to create this company? Since the Oromo nation does not have its own government and institutions at this moment, the development of our language, culture, literature, and art are stunted. We believe that we, as concerned Oromos, and others should not allow these problems to continue, and we should build this company by taking practical action. Furthermore, we believe that this company will play a significant role in a liberated Oromia since it is a private company that will be owned and managed by its owners. Once there are political opportunities in Oromia, this company will move its headquarters there and function openly by engaging in publishing and distributing all necessary materials for education, administration, and development. The lack of such a company in Oromo society has discouraged Oromo writers, artists, businesspeople, filmmaker, play writers, politicians, and scientists to write and distribute their new ideas in Afaan Oromoo and other languages. We believe that this company will be the key to an Oromo cultural renaissance with the active participation of concerned and active Oromos and others. Without this cultural renaissance, Oromummaa cannot develop and blossom.
What are the main projects of this company? The immediate projects of this company include publishing books, producing CDs and audio videos, and distributing them. Its long-term projects include establishing a magazine that covers Northeast Africa or Africa entirely. The company will establish its headquarters in different places. It will engage in hiring Oromo writers, filmmakers, play writers, and other talented individuals to develop Oromo culture and other aspects of Oromo society through their specialized knowledge that will be distributed to the public through various outlets.
How does the company secure book manuscripts and other materials that it will publish? It can purchase manuscripts or hire specialists to write about important Oromo issues. It will purchase films or hire filmmakers to produce films about Oromo society. It will encourage Oromo musicians to produce relevant Oromo music that promotes Oromo culture, identity, and history and purchases from them to produce in CDs to sell.
Who will be the main customers of the company? The main customers of this company will be Oromos and others who are interested in Oromo issues. In the future, its customer’s base will expand when its activities expand.
From where does the company secure its initial capital? Concerned Oromos and others who are committed to develop the Oromo language, culture, history, and art contribute one thousand dollars each. One of the founding volunteers has provided a book manuscript that may secure some money for the company. There are also founding volunteers who spend their energy and time freely to build this organization.
What is the benefit of becoming a member of this company? The first benefit is to be an agent of social change in developing Oromo culture and Oromummaa. The second benefit is having some ownership in a business company that protects our money and works to make profit. By becoming members of this company, we are empowering ourselves by producing knowledge for liberation. As it accumulates more capital, it will also invest in stock markets or other businesses. When our heroines and heroes risk their lives to liberate our nation, we should not afraid to invest one thousand dollars to promote projects that are dedicated to develop and expand Oromummaa. Victory cannot be achieved by chances; it is only achieved by choices. Since it will be regulated by the U.S. business laws, there is nothing to fear in investing in the Oromia Publishing Compnay.
